For the past year, The Anchor has studied the attributes of God, using The One True God, by Paul Washer. After completing this study on my own, the Lord burdened me to lead the church through this book. The Lord has used this resource and our study each week to bring about significant growth in our knowledge of our great God and Savior.
First let me say a word about the study of God. Some of you may feel that it is a boring or fruitless exercise to study His attributes. I admit that I harbored similar thoughts at one time, until I listened to a series of messages from a conference focused on the attributes of God (click here for the sermons from the 2005 Heartcry Conference). Through these messages the Lord opened my eyes to see and ponder His beauty as never before. After listening to the messages, my soul hungered to know more. I became aware of The One True God, written by Brother Paul Washer, a former missionary to Peru. This book can be purchased online, but is also available as a free download if you don’t mind printing the pages. More than a lecture, this resource is a workbook that leads you through a study of God’s attributes in the Word of God so that you might learn, reflect, worship, and experience the reality of God’s perfections for yourself. I gladly confess that the presence of the Living God has visited me during my studies while using this resource!
Though I completed the workbook on my own, I have taken a slightly different approach to using this resource with the congregation. I study each chapter and then prepare an interactive lesson based upon the content and related topics the Lord lays upon my heart. It seems that before I study each chapter, I experience the same fears, “what can I say about this attribute of God that will capture the hearts and minds of the congregation?”, or “what can I tell them that they don’t already know?”. Time after time, God proves my fears to be foolish. The knowledge of the Holy is the highest pursuit of man. It will be our eternal occupation in glory. If you seek Him, He will captivate your heart and fill you with His fullness.
“You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand are pleasures forever.” – Psalm 16:11.
Try The One True God; you will not be disappointed!
